A co-worker of mine just came to my office in tears. She said her mother in law just called her and asked her to stop over to her house after work. Come to find out, a collection agency called the mother in law about some bills (credit card) that my co-worker and her hubby could not pay.

I did not know that collection agencies could call family members or anyone other than the person who owed the money? Is this legal?

I don't know if this is legal or not but it happens all the time. My parents have been called by my creditors in the past even though they were not co-signers.

I didn't know they could call family either especially if they are not on the account or co-signers. I would be pretty mad! If they are not taking the calls though, then the collection agency might try to find out where they are.

If your co-worker or hubby was refusing to answer their calls then the collection agency might call other people with the same name looking for them in case they had the wrong number. (or so they could claim)

That is what they did cheapo - She called me and told me that she called the agency and they said they could not reach them so they thought they might have moved. What a lie!
