Default Social security/medicare - is it going to be gone?

I have been hearing on the news lately that the politicians are talking about cutting these programs for older people in order to save government money. Is it true we will not have these when we retire?

I hope it's not true! We have been paying in just as the "baby boomers" have paid in. I'm not sure what is going to come of either program. I really thought that the Government was talking about cutting some of the welfare type programs.

I don't think Medicare will be gone, however it will be changes meaning a lot of elderly people will not have the resources they need. Social Security will be gone before we ever get to draw it.

I agree with zipper. I'm certainly not counting on SS as part of my retirement plan. If it does happen to be there, though, the extra income will be lovely.

I'm not counting on it. People are living a lot longer then they were 50 years ago. I've seen articles that are saying kids born today have the ability to live to almost 150 years with modern science. That is what, 70 years of retirement. No way the system can handle that. It cannot handle all the baby boomers retiring now. I think the last statement I got said I cannot collect full until around the age of 67 or 70.

Yeah, they keep raising the ages and the amount you can get at ages too. Just graduating, I do not think I will see a penny of that money. I think I will have to rely fully on my own savings for retirement.

Anyone less than 60 who is counting on social security or medicare as part of their retirement is a fool. We will be lucky if it survives another ten years, and even if it survives beyond that the amount you will recieve won't be close to enough to live on. I figure most people won't be able to retire any more. You'll be working until the day you die.

There are already threats that social security checks will not go out in August if they don't come to an agreement. I am sure they will, but eventually they will have no choice but to use the reserve fund to pay benefits, which would drain the fun in a matter of 10-20 years.

I honestly do not think so, the people who should have it now do not have nearly as much as they should. I bet we get zip from it, if even that!

There were threats about social security checks not going out and then someone else came out and said that it would not happen.

I don't think our Government should take the debt out on the elderly. I don't think it will be there when I'm old enough to use it - whenever that is.
