My mate has told me that preference going out would be "viking style", buried at sea while set on fire. There are laws against this correct? How could you get around them?

This is interesting. I never heard of someone wanting to go that way. What country are you guys from? I am pretty sure the laws are different depending on the country. Perhaps, there are exceptions or permissions that could be attained.

In the US but I have never heard of anyone having this done. Most times its only something overseas or in the movies so I am guessing the chances are pretty slim (to none).

I wonder if you could do this if you went out into international waters. I'm not really sure though. It'd be an interesting way to go, that's for sure.

What is the reasoning behind it? Set on fire and all? That seems like an unpleasant goodbye. I always thought the old time, floating down a river with candles and flowers was peaceful. I can't imagine it would be legal though.

I told him that if he can find a law that means I am okay to do it without going to jail I am okay for it. Now if I have to go to jail I am not sure I would but we can always change it so his best friend (who the friend and I do not always get along with) can do it.

If he's really serious about it I would look online and maybe contact a lawyer just to see. You might be suprised what's frowned upon but not actually against the law.

If you go out into internation waters, you are subject to the laws of whose flag you sail under. So if you where a U.S. Flaged Ship, you are subject to U.S. law. I do not see it as a big deal of the burrial at sea. What I would see is that an un-licensed mortician handled the body causing problems.

Enviromental laws I do believe state that you cannot put ashes into a body of water. However, I've known people who have done it.

BTW, I do think it is a good way to be "disposed" of.

It's not legal in the US but it's a big ocean out there. Unfortunately fire can be seen for miles and you'd end up with other boats sending distress calls so it's probably illegal anywhere.
