Default Five bucks a day club

I am the only member of a club I call the "five-bucks-a-day" club. I force myself to put five dollars each day in a jar in my pantry. The money must come from coupon savings on things I buy anyway, from a special offer I find, or from an odd job I pick up. I can also use eBay sales or anywhere else to fund my jar. I don't go to bed at night until I've met my commitment. At the end of the year, I have a guaranteed $1825. to add to my retirement savings.

This sounds like a club I need to join. That's a good idea, MissPriss, and I admire you for your discipline. (You need to run for Congress!) At the moment, most of my retirement dollars are coming from interest accrued which isn't very much with the anemic interest rates.

I love this club! I don't know if I could come with $5 a day though. I don't shop daily (to have a savings) and I don't sell on E-bay. What other ways could I come up with an extra $5 a day?

Do you have stuff around the house that you never use, but could sell?

It's easier than you think. There are times when we plan to eat out but change our minds at the last minute and see what we can round up in the fridge that need eating before we have to throw them out. That's savings. There are times when you make far more than $5. a day, so you can pay several days at once. Head to the computer and type in "code" or "coupon" on anything you're planning to buy. Most of the time there's a coupon out there. I end up with far more than $2000 per year.

That's a fantastic idea! I should do this too, although the extra money will go towards paying debt down for now instead of retirement. Thanks for the clarification on how to reach $5 a day as well.

I did something like this a few years ago. I was putting aside $2. a day from change or dollar bills. I found myself scrambling to have the extra cash around every day, so I kind of gave up on the idea. But all was not lost because instead, every week I took an extra $14. out of my paycheck and tucked it away. I had around $700. for Christmas gifts that year that didn't go on a credit card.

Thanks for the great idea! I have been thinking about enrolling in an automatic savings program through my bank. My daughter's really want to go to Disney world but I can never save enough. Between this $5 a day club and my bank's program I think we can manage next year!

I used to do something like this. Everytime I did not eat out for lunch, but brought my lunch to work with me, I set aside 5$, every dollar I saved from using coupons I set aside, and every coffee I didn't buy I set aside 1.50$. I ended up accruing over 500$ and used it to make a lump sum payment on my car loan.

This is the inspiration I need to start this again. Thank you.
