Default shopping addiction

I know someone who is in over their head with a shopping addiction and while it is a female, its not the typical clothes or shoes. Instead its all about random figurines and sometimes she even hides them from her husband. When is it too much, when you are hiding them from your family? When you are in debt? When is it time for an intervention??

I can't even wrap my frugal head around a shopping addiction, but I would think you would view it as any addiction. It sounds like she needs help now. If she is hiding these figurines from her husband, my guess is that they are either expensive or she is already way under water with her spending.

She might resent whoever tries to help her, but maybe she'll be grateful later. It's better she gets help now before she is a couple of thousand dollars more in the red.

I think when you have to hide something its a bad sign that things are already too far over the top. The best bet might just be to fess up before its too late and then who knows what happens, the mortgage check bounces??

Very sad indeed! I hope the husband finds out soon and gets her to stop. I don't have a shopping addiction. I think you nailed it though by calling it an addiction. All addictions need help.

I saw a documentary about people who are hoarders. I wonder if that's part of a shopping addiction. Either way, I agree that a shopping addiction can be real trouble for that individual.

There has to be some underlying problem which could even be physical. I'm only guessing, but anything is possible. Whatever the cause, the effect could be huge credit card debt and eventual bankruptcy.

Figurines? Oh my.... I know different people are interested in different items to collect. But I cannot imagine spending a lot of money on figurines, unless money were not an issue for her.

I don't think there is such thing as "addicted to shopping". I suspect they use the terms just as an excuse for their shopping (mis) behavior. Anyway, I agree with the others, it's not a good sign when you have hidden something from your significant other.

I think sometimes people just need to sub one thing out for another. I know someone who did this and got on "kicks" but each time they were different. The obsession would change just like the season or year.
