Now is the time to figure out if you are claiming correctly at your workplace. I’m an accountant and its time. Check out your W2 statement or even your last paystub. See how much in taxes you paid, are you getting money back or paying in. Correct this by changing your deductions at your workplace. I claim Single with 0 dependents – this is the way to claim if you want the most taxes taken out. I like getting money back in my taxes at the end of the year. I use it for vacation. Are you claiming correct for you and your family?

We already did this for work but we are also checking for every other bill that we have. Lately we caught that tons of people in our area are paying too much for home owners insurance (us included).

Smart tips and thank you! I noticed that I was not getting enough taxes taken out of me about half way through the year. Somehow my status changed in HR - I told them it was illegal to make changes unless I requested them in writing.

I should look into this, but I don't think I can until I file the taxes. I won't know how much or little I'm getting back until then. I never thought about looking into homeowners - or quoting it out again. Thanks for the tip.

I also like getting money back during tax season although I have read that it is better to have less money taken out of your check that you can use or save yourself rather than letting Uncle Sam get an "interest free" loan with your money.
