I have always heard this is never a bad thing but when I help people to setup their domains and wordpress blogs I hate hearing bad feedback. People assume that search engines will just magically find you. How do you deal with a hard head?
Search engines will magically find your website in no time (I mean less than 24 hours...in some cases), but they will not magically rank it. Even the best optimized websites will not instantly appear on the first Google's result pages.
I wonder if this is why we see such a saturation online from all the guru's who want to change you a few hundred dollars to get your site up and running. What happens if they do something you do not know about and then you are fined for it somehow?

The guru saturation is there because of the sales potential. I don't know of the present statistics but it used to be 5% of all people who read, see or hear an advertisement will take notice of it. And about 5% of those people will actually buy. So with the extremely inexpensive cost of online advertising and a virtual endless potential of buyers they will make money.
As far as getting fined for something....at the moment there is no person in charge of fining!
Since I started my own website, I'm keenly aware of how much work it takes to get a large amount of traffic. Unfortunately, most people seem to think that a website automatically gets found in the search engines. I guess we can all thank the gurus who make these outlandish promises and guarantees.
