Default Kids' expensive hobbies

What if your kids were fond of costly hobbies which you don't think you could afford to fund? How would you tell the kids about it and suggest them find other hobbies?

Children need to learn about money and the value of having a budget. You could give them a certain allowance to buy things related to their hobby. If they're willing to save their allowance to pay for a more expensive hobby, they've learned an important life lesson.

I like that thought frugalgirl - I also think that kids can help out around the house for chore money. Kids have to learn that you cannot always do everything you find interesting. Make a deal with them, you pay half and they pay half.

When I was seven or eight, we had a chart with household chores that I was allowed to do. I'd get a star for each completed chore and a quarter. I'd spend some of it on things I wanted like candy or coloring books, but I saved a lot of it. It taught me to value not only money, but also the time it took to earn it.

That would a tough situation. As a parent, I would always encourage the kids to do what they love and pursue their dreams, so to speak. If they were really fond of the hobby, I would get them save up for funding it.

The kids in my life love hobbies and are into bead making right now. Beads can range from inexpensive to downright top dollar. They make the bracelets and necklaces and give them away, so keeping them in the inexpensive parts of the bead store is a must for me.

The biggest thing we have right now is the DS games and our kids want all of them. Most are about 15-20 per game and when they see all of their favorites its hard to explain why they can only get one at a time.

I worry about this. My kids are very young right now so I haven't run into this issue, but I do worry about trying to find the money if they want to do things like take dance classes.
