Default long distance calling for holidays

I know tons of people use Sykpe, but what else has good long distance rates (if any)? I just spent an hour on the phone with a family member catching up on good times but I wonder what the bill is going to look like.

How about face time with Apple products? I know my daughter uses this to talk to her father. Does your phone company offer any long distance plan? I know most digital phone plans now include long-distance calls for free.

I think Skype is the most popular and used VoIP and video calling service provider. Though, there are several good alternatives to it. You can try Google Voice or Vbuzzer.

I keep hearing about these video phones and I am wondering if its worth investing in. From what I have been reading its like Sykpe but better by about 100 fold. I am just wondering how much of the internet connection it will use.
