I think some cats like people are just more prone to get fat, especially as they age. They do have cat food out there now just for overweight cats that you might try. I don't know if it really works or not.
A change of food might be a good idea just remember you might need to try a few before a cat will like it. I have seen a few picky eaters in my day and our last cat was the worst about it. Get her the wrong cat food and for a week she will hate you.
